Edward Penfield built the Collier's Labor Day Number of August 31, 1901 around four workingmen locked shoulder to shoulder against a flat field of crimson, the poster style stripped down until only silhouette and line remain.

A pickaxe rides one bare shoulder. A tin lantern swings low in a fist still gritty with coal dust, its glass throwing the only warm glow inside a scheme of cream, black, and pink halftone dots. Beside him a checkered wool coat carries a long-handled shovel across its back; a striped-shirt tinsmith grips a saw and a red toolbox like proof of his trade.

Penfield, seasoned on Harper's covers and steeped in the Art Nouveau poster idiom of the 1890s, trades ornament for the bare economy of the American illustration movement at its height.

Bold black lettering names the volume and the price of ten cents. The true currency here is coal, timber, and steel: four trades standing still before a shift begins on the eve of the nation's first working-class holiday.

Origin Story

Edward Penfield (1866–1925) was an influential American illustrator and graphic designer, known as a key figure in the development of American poster art.

He trained at the Art Students League in New York and became the art director at Harper's magazine, where he created iconic monthly posters that defined the visual style of the 1890s.

Penfield’s work, known for its bold lines and effective use of color, drew inspiration from Japanese prints and French artists like Toulouse-Lautrec.

He played a major role in shaping American graphic design, continuing to produce posters, book covers, and commercial art throughout his career.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
