Artwork Description
The young woman tilts her head toward her right shoulder, a Cycladic stillness running through her profile. Her bare shoulders end at a softly serpentine drape line; her low chignon recalls Hellenistic Aphrodites filtered through Vermont Calvinism.
Hiram Powers carved his Greek Slave in Florence during the 1840s, and this bust survives as the chamber-scaled version of that full-length marble, photographed here in an albumen reproduction made between 1870 and 1890.
Powers had trained in Cincinnati before settling among the expatriate sculptors of Tuscany, where Italian artisans helped reproduce his composition in cabinet-scale variants for collectors across Europe and America.
Held close, the photograph recovers the cold density of nineteenth-century stone, the breath of the carver still trapped in surface.
