About this treasure

Artwork Description

This oil portrait of a Royal Navy bluejacket from HMS Comus, attributed to Princess Louise, pulls the nineteenth-century enlisted man out of historical anonymity and into oil's full gravity.

The flat-cap sits at a rake over dark hair, and beneath it, a gaze calibrated to squalls. The navy serge absorbs light at its shadowed folds while the red crown-and-chevron rating badge burns against the sleeve — scarlet on midnight blue, rank coded into wool.

Flesh tones shift from terracotta along the cheek to cooler umber in the beard's depth, the brushwork sliding between academic precision and atmospheric looseness at the cloud-banked horizon. A man who knows rope-calloused work gets painted with the attention usually reserved for admirals. That weathered, olive-warm face, soft-blended at the jaw, betrays no deference to the royal hand that painted it.

Artist Biography

Princess Louise Caroline Alberta (1848–1939) broke two kinds of stone — the protocols of Victorian royalty, and the marble she carved into monuments. The fourth daughter of Queen Victoria, she became the first British royal to attend a public art school, training under sculptor Mary Thornycroft before studying at the National Art Training School, South Kensington, under the tutelage of Joseph Edgar Boehm. Her marble busts of royal siblings entered the Royal Collection; her luminous paintings were shown at the Royal Academy and the Grosvenor Gallery.

Her most enduring works stand in stone and bronze: the monumental marble statue of Queen Victoria in Kensington Gardens — acclaimed in 1893 as the finest of its kind — and the Boer War memorial in St Paul's Cathedral. As viceregal consort in Canada, she helped found the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and the National Gallery of Canada, and painted the Canadian landscape with a painter's freedom she never relinquished.iographiesographies
