About the Artist

Toyohara Kunichika, born Ōshima Yasohachi in 1835, was a prominent Japanese woodblock print artist known for his vivid portrayals of kabuki actors and beautiful women (bijinga).

Trained under Utagawa Kunisada, Kunichika mastered the yakusha-e genre, capturing the drama and vibrancy of Edo and Meiji period theater. His prints, characterized by strong reds and purples, defied traditional color palettes and embraced modern influences.

Despite personal struggles with alcohol and a turbulent life, Kunichika’s work remains celebrated for its dynamic use of color, innovative compositions, and ability to blend traditional ukiyo-e with the evolving spirit of the Meiji era.
