About this Artwork

The vampire bat rides the thin seam of evening, webbed digits steering like oars through a slate sky. Samuel Howitt catches the instant breath of air it steals, every vein in the membranous wing mapped by stipple and wash.

Below, a low strip of brush barely holds the page; above, Georgian air widens. Natural history meets theater. Zoological illustration turns predator into silhouette, then back into fur and pulse.

This Study of a Vampire Bat reads British print culture, chiroptera anatomy, field observation, Romantic attention, and the old engraving tradition through one brown body in motion. Ochre muzzle forward, it tests currents, cartography of night, scientific art learned by eye and hand, quiet accuracy that still feels alive.
