Forest Illustration opens at the hour a Kyoto printer finally lets the lamp gutter. Ink-black ground swallows the paper. Out of it, straw-yellow fronds claw upward on a slant, forked like lightning that grew roots. This Japanese woodblock print by Wataabe Seitei came from Shin-Bijutsukai, the design magazine Unsōdō issued in Kyoto between 1901 and 1906 under the editors Furuya Kōrin and Kamisaka Sekka.
Look closer and the carved cherry block confesses itself. Woodgrain runs through every frond. The baren pressed jade-green leaves so lightly they came up streaked and dry, a moku hanga fingerprint no machine could forge.
Cream-white blossoms open in five points. Ochre stamens glow at their centers like tiny pilot lights left burning in a sleeping house. Meiji era Japan was rebuilding itself at railway speed, yet here a forest refuses the clock and keeps its own dark time.
