About the Artwork
At Utagahama the leaves of Chuzenji Temple's lakeside trees drop a cool olive shadow across the path, and Kawase Hasui built his 1931 woodblock around that pause between shadow and glare. Two travelers step out of it. Straw hats. A walking stick tapping dry ochre sand.
Ahead, a cinnabar torii marks the threshold where the grounds of Chuzenji meet the water, a temple the monk Shodo Shonin founded in the mountains above Nikko. The lake burns cobalt near the horizon and pales to aquamarine in the shallows. A rowboat waits at the water's edge beside the gate. Passengers huddle in a ferry as the boatman leans into his pole.
Hasui's shin-hanga method paired his watercolor sketches with Watanabe Shozaburo's carvers and printers, and you can feel their hands in every chiseled leaf. Collectors adored these Japanese travel prints between the wars.
