Sakai Hoitsu set Paulownias and Chrysanthemums on gold, the way painted screens turned Edo rooms into weather.
Gold leaf hums behind everything. Sakai Hoitsu lets the Edo period sky turn to hammered metal, then swings a paulownia bough across it like an arm reaching for a cup of sake. Look at that trunk. Ink pooled into wet ink, the Rinpa trick called tarashikomi, leaving bark blotched with lichen coins of malachite green.
Beneath it, kiku tumble toward the river in snow-white and marigold. These were the flowers of the Chrysanthemum Festival, their petals floated in sake each ninth month for long life. A deep gunjo blue current slides past a hillside of verdigris, its curves traced in fine gold line.
Hoitsu carried the Rinpa school out of Kyoto memory and into Edo daylight. He painted with a monk's patience and a daimyo's son's taste for shine.
