The Harmony of Nature opens on this tough phone case like a lacquer box unlatched in 1880s Liverpool. George Ashdown Audsley, Scottish architect and pipe organ designer, heard Japanese ornament as pitch. Here the pitch turns green. A lotus-crinkled leaf swings from its speckled stalk. Pale celadon veins fan across it in paper-parasol pleats before fraying into burnt sienna and saffron edges.
A small bird clings to the stem below. Teal feathers crown its skull, and an ivory wing patch glows against soot-black plumage. One citrine eye fixes on the olive-gold grass. Old Japanese kacho-e, the bird-and-flower genre, meets Victorian Aesthetic Movement appetite here, printed in stacked chromolithograph layers thick as varnish.
Behind them, a cinnabar background is scratched with ink-dark dashes that could be rain striking Japonisme lacquer. Impact-resistant and dual-layered, your phone case carries this decorative art into every pocket. The bird never stops watching the reeds for what comes next.
