About the Artwork

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi tips a summer meadow into your palm on this Selected Insects phone case. Every creature crawls across straw-ochre paper stained like a field at dusk. A swallowtail butterfly spreads sumi ink wings freckled with pale eyespots. Beside it a charcoal newt arches its tail, frozen mid-scuttle.

You read this Japanese woodblock print the way a Meiji-era child might have. Hand-brushed hiragana names drift beside each body, so a katydid in malachite green sits labeled like a word in a primer.

Yoshitoshi trained under Utagawa Kuniyoshi, the ukiyo-e great known for his cats and monsters. Here the student turns toward play. A dragonfly hovers with jade eyes. Two ladybugs roll past a bristling centipede. Up in the corner a toad squats, patient as a stone lantern.

Prints in this spirit, called omocha-e, were made for children to study or cut apart. Carry this protective phone case and the lesson keeps going. Your pocket becomes a field notebook of Japanese natural history, crowded with small lives that refuse to sit still.

Origin Story

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892) was the luminous final star of Japan’s ukiyo-e tradition, brilliantly fusing classical techniques with bold innovation.

Born in Edo, Yoshitoshi apprenticed under master Kuniyoshi, developing exceptional skill in capturing delicate emotion and intricate beauty.

His prints—ranging from tender portrayals of everyday intimacy to evocative mythical scenes—reflect a profound appreciation of Japanese culture during its transformative shift from Edo to Meiji eras.

Celebrated series such as One Hundred Aspects of the Moon highlight his poetic vision and meticulous artistry, confirming Yoshitoshi’s enduring legacy as a master who gently illuminated life’s subtle poetry with elegance and grace.
