A swallowtail butterfly spreads sumi ink wings freckled with pale eyespots. Beside it a charcoal newt arches its tail, frozen mid-scuttle.
You read this Japanese woodblock print the way a Meiji-era child might have. Hand-brushed hiragana names drift beside each body, so a katydid in malachite green sits labeled like a word in a primer.
Yoshitoshi trained under Utagawa Kuniyoshi, the ukiyo-e great known for his cats and monsters. Here the student turns toward play. A dragonfly hovers with jade eyes. Two ladybugs roll past a bristling centipede. Up in the corner a toad squats, patient as a stone lantern.
