Utagawa Kuniyoshi drew Dragon Flying Above Turbulent Waves in 1831, and Edo carvers cut every scale of this Japanese woodblock print into cherry wood. Tenpō era Edo fell in love with imported Prussian blue, and Kuniyoshi floods the sea below with it. The waves curl upward into cream-white claws, grasping at a bright red belly they will never touch. Golden ochre crests fan behind the skull, like paper umbrella ribs in typhoon wind. Vermilion flames licking the throat in striped bands. Mouth hanging open, small fangs bared, long whiskers dragging through the soot cloud.
Kuniyoshi made his name with Suikoden warrior prints, tattooed outlaws who leapt from paper onto the backs of Edo firefighters. This Japanese dragon carries that same muscle.
