Lilies - Katsushika Hokusai Phone Case

Hokusai Lilies arrive on this tough phone case the way summer weather arrived in Edo, all at once and leaning sideways. Katsushika Hokusai was in his seventies when he drew these blooms for his Large Flowers series around 1833. Old hands. Restless eye. He tilted every stem into a wind you cannot see.

Cream petals curl back like paper left too near a brazier. Their throats flush with apricot, peppered with rust-orange freckles that the carver nicked into cherry wood. Dark anthers swing out on thin stamens, each pinned in place by inky key-block outlines. Behind them bottle-green leaves go almost black, laid down in one heavy pass of pigment.

The sky is a celadon ground so pale it looks rained on. Look close and the wood grain shows through, a fingerprint left by the ukiyo-e workshop of publisher Nishimuraya Yohachi. This is kacho-e at its most unruly, Japanese botanical art that refuses to sit still.

Centuries later, the lilies still hang heavy with midsummer dreaming. And when you hold this phone case, the nearest bloom seems to lean out past your fingers forever, searching for the sweet kiss of rain.
