The plate was slow, the lights were hot, and nobody could move — so a man held his hand exactly where it lay, on a shoulder, a knee, the small of a back, and held it until the shutter finally closed. Wool and starch and sweat coming through both. Hats tilted. One of them grinning at something just past the camera. Then out the door with a print to pin up at home, hung for all to see, none the wiser.

About this collection
Early gay photography arrived the moment the camera did. Sarony shot Wilde in New York in 1882, all velvet and insolence; von Gloeden draped his models in togas under the Sicilian sun; Marconi made studies for painters that read now as gay art photography outright; Eakins stripped Bill Duckett down and called it an academy study.
Then the couples: sailors on shore leave, Edwardian dandies in matching lapels, baseball buddies with an arm slung where an arm has no business resting. Captain Moonlite, who asked to be buried beside James Nesbitt. Rupert Bunny and his bohemian mates. Galdi's reclining models, Eakins's hard studio light, strongmen mid-flex, Dupain's Sunbaker drying off on the New South Wales coast. Black and white, sepia, grain and all.
Posters, drawings and the rest of the period hang in Vintage Gay Art. The photographs stay here, still grinning past the lens.
