About this Artwork
This Photographic Postcard Portrait of a Cowboy, a gelatin silver print from the early 1900s, fixes a Black cowhand at the absolute center of American frontier mythology—and refuses to flinch. He sits with his hand resting on a leather holster belt, wide-brimmed felt hat shadowing a gaze that addresses the camera without performance or petition. The concho-studded leather vest catches what light the studio gives, each oval medallion a tiny mirror pushing back against erasure.
Around 9,000 Black cowhands worked the late 19th-century American West; most never entered a frame. This man did. His angora woolly chaps pile against the lower edge of the composition—working garb, not costume—while ball-fringe leather trim at the vest's hem carries the precise vocabulary of rodeo culture.
The painted studio backdrop, warm as bisque clay, holds him in a sepia-to-burnt-umber wash that feels less like nostalgia than edifice: a working life pressed into silver emulsion, still refusing its own disappearance.
