The strapped footwear recalls gladiatorial costume, placing this nineteenth-century strongman into dialogue with Roman arenas and Hellenistic heroics.
Beyond documentation, the print reflects late-Victorian obsessions: anthropology, performance, masculinity, and the coded eroticism circulating in art circles. Collectors saw in Sandow’s poses the rebirth of antique statuary, now mediated by the camera’s eye.
