About this Artwork
In this vision of a man's Japanese Wabori tattoos, the body’s surface becomes an epic scroll, etched with dragons and coiling serpents. Each scale a fragment of the eternal floating world. The man stands, one hand poised on the curve of his hip, the other gripping the edge of history’s invisible wall. Blue, red, and ochre inks collide across the skin like the rippling of water in Edo’s pleasure quarters, where inked bodies once mingled in the smoke-drenched flicker of lantern light
This is the Irezumi of the Meiji era: luminous, subversive, an archive of suffering and beauty that defies erasure. The white headband keeps sweat and memory in check—bright as a blade of light. His body tells the unspoken tale of fishermen’s toil, yakuza’s wrath, and the spirit guardians of Shinto folklore. Each element of his Wabori tattoos become a shrine, a vessel, a vow to remain ungovernable.
