Artist Biography

George Barbier (1882–1932) was one of the leading French illustrators of the early 20th century. Born in Nantes, he quickly rose to prominence after his first exhibition in 1911, receiving commissions for theater and ballet costume design, book illustration, and haute couture fashion work.

Known as part of "The Knights of the Bracelet," a group lauded for their elegance, Barbier's contemporaries included his cousins Bernard Boutet de Monvel and Pierre Brissaud. Throughout his career, he also explored jewelry, glass, and wallpaper design, while contributing writings to the Gazette du Bon Ton.

Barbier worked on costume design for the Folies Bergère and gained wider recognition with his work in L'Illustration magazine. He passed away in 1932, leaving behind a legacy of sophistication and innovation in art and fashion design.
