About the Artwork
Karl Wiener drew Skeleton (The 150 Leaves) in 1944, the year air raid sirens started howling over Vienna. His grinning guest arrives late to a carnival nobody else survived. The jaw hangs loose. Both eye sockets drink graphite until they shine like cellar coal.
Below that chattering grin, a ruff collar curdles into shadow. The harlequin costume splinters into zigzag shards of bone ivory and sage parchment, every diamond scratched in by restless pencil crosshatching. Pierrot lost his face and kept the outfit. One arm shoots up at the far right edge, its bony fist clawing at a carbon black sky like a passenger hailing the last tram home.
Danse macabre has crept through Austrian art since the plague years. Wiener, a Viennese artist stuck inside a city swallowed by the Third Reich, smuggled that old memento mori into his private cycle of The 150 Leaves. The laughter here rattles like cutlery in an emptied dining room.
