In Red Demon with Parrot’s Head Shooting Arrow from Bow, a Tibetan tsakli card, a bright red archer pulls the string so hard his pot belly creases into a scowl. One white eye sights down the shaft. His lapis beak hooks toward a target beyond the saffron ochre border, lodged in the obstacle you carried in.

At an empowerment, an itinerant lama lifts this Tibetan Buddhist initiation card at arm’s length and the room goes quiet enough to hear oil lamps spit. Initiates fix the parrot-headed figure in their visualization, from coral-studded gold armlets down to bare toes gripping malachite green. His leopard-skin loincloth swings its tail like a second weapon.

Parrots repeat everything. This wrathful protector repeats the lama’s mantra as a shot. Gouache has split into a net of cracks, each one a mile this miniature painting rode between Himalayan monasteries in a portable mandala.

Hang this Tibetan tsakli art print where you make decisions. The string stays taut. The beak keeps pointing at whatever you keep postponing.

Origin Story

Tsakli are Tibetan Buddhist initiation cards: miniature paintings made in sets of a handful to nearly a hundred. Itinerant lamas carried them between monasteries, lifting each card at arm’s length during an empowerment so initiates could fix the deity in their visualisation. Laid out in order, a set becomes a portable mandala; tucked into a gau, a single card travels as protection.

The imagery shifts with each ritual. Wrathful herukas and protectors, some animal-headed or many-armed, dance within halos of flame, turning obstacles into wisdom. Buddhas and lineage masters sit enthroned, hands shaped in mudras. Other cards hold no figure: a phurba dagger, a dorje, a flaming jewel, a torma offering cake, an elephant bearing treasure. These can stand in for objects too rare to procure, and in funerary rites guide the deceased through the bardo.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
