Hero and Leander opens on a signal already dead. Ferdinand Keller paints the Hellespont at its cruelest hour in an 1875 history painting of charcoal storm cloud and bone-white foam. Hero clings to the cliff at Sestos. Her torch is out. A plume of soot streams from it like a flag nobody in Abydos can read.

She was a priestess of Aphrodite, sworn to the lamp. Each night her small fire steered a swimmer across a strait of pewter water. Tonight the gale tore it loose. One arm clamps over her skull. One sandaled foot grips wet stone as her chiton snaps against a slate gray sky.

Below, Leander floats face up in the surf, ivory skin drained to ash, a linen cloth knotted at his hips. A gull dives toward him.

Keller trained in Karlsruhe and painted with the operatic swagger of Hans Makart, and this monochrome Greek mythology art print keeps that Neo-Baroque hunger for bodies in crisis. On this Romantic seascape’s highest rock, a woman stands one gust from following him down.

Origin Story

Ferdinand Keller (1842–1922) was a German history and genre painter who learned to draw beneath Brazilian palms. Born in Karlsruhe to a civil engineer, he spent four teenage years in Brazil while his father designed bridges, roads and dams, teaching himself by sketching tropical foliage and Rio’s markets. Returning, he trained at the Karlsruhe Academy under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Ludwig des Coudres, absorbed Hans Canon’s Rubens-rich glazes, then shared a Rome studio with Anselm Feuerbach.

The Death of Philip II won him notice at the 1867 Paris Exposition. As professor and, from 1880 to 1913, director of the Karlsruhe Academy, Keller painted Baden’s history on a colossal scale, while his curtains graced the Dresden Semperoper and his decorations earned him nobility in Württemberg. His late Böcklin’s Grave, where the Grim Reaper stands watch, reveals a brooding Symbolist undertow.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
