Dorozhand watches from the far edge of fate, and Sidney Sime gives the god of destiny a face carved from cliff and bone. A giant skull rises out of the sea in this gothic fantasy art print, its jaw unhinged wide enough to swallow storms. Cumulus clouds boil from the teeth. Snow-capped peaks crowd behind the cranium like courtiers waiting their turn.

Below, a lone oarsman in an ink-black coat leans into his rowing boat. He pulls toward the mouth.

Sime drew for Lord Dunsany’s The Gods of Pegāna in 1905, building cosmologies from ink wash and nerve. The waves are combed into thousands of crosshatched threads, pen-and-ink labor from a former pit boy who knew how heavy a mine shaft’s blackness sits on the shoulders. Umber wash pools in the eye sockets. Charcoal shadow presses down from a ceiling of sky.

H.P. Lovecraft prized this Edwardian fantasy illustration for its cold cosmic dread. Hang it where dark academia meets memento mori, and let the rower keep pulling toward the open jaw of tomorrow.

Origin Story

Sidney Herbert Sime (1865–1941) was the English artist who drew fantasy with a satirist's teeth. Born poor in Hulme, Manchester, he spent five years as a scoop pusher in the Yorkshire coal mines, almost losing his life. A linen shop, a barber's, signwriting. Finally the Liverpool School of Art, and awards. His fantastic illustrations for Pick-Me-Up, The Idler and the Pall Mall Gazette masked biting satire, aimed at politicians and the rich.

Approached in 1904 by Lord Dunsany, he illustrated The Gods of Pegāna, A Dreamer's Tales and The Book of Wonder, where his pictures inspired some of the stories. Almost exclusively monochrome at first, he turned late to colour, designed scenery and costumes, and drew frontispieces for William Hope Hodgson and Arthur Machen. His widow Mary preserved what remained; it became the Sime Gallery in Worplesdon, Surrey.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
