A lama raises this Tibetan tsakli card at arm’s length, and the yellow demon surrounded by flames lurches forward, about to gobble a man whole. Fangs bared. The captive dangles from one ocher fist, legs limp. Hair erupts in ash-mauve ropes around a bone-white skull the size of a thumb's nail.

Itinerant lamas carried initiation cards like this over Himalayan passes, a set for each empowerment ritual. Initiates held the wrathful protector in visualization until it lived behind their eyelids. Gouache and mineral pigments soaked into cotton. Time cracked them into dry riverbeds. Rust red flame tongues lick a salmon halo, and a malachite green night pools behind everything.

A spotted hide bristles at the hips. Hoops drag each earlobe low. In Vajrayana teaching the captive is your own knot of obstacles, devoured so you can walk lighter. Folded into a gau amulet box, a single card once rode against a traveler’s heart as protection. Pinned above your desk, this Tibetan Buddhist art print keeps its jaws wide, hungry for whatever you toss into the fire next.

Origin Story

Tsakli are Tibetan Buddhist initiation cards: miniature paintings made in sets of a handful to nearly a hundred. Itinerant lamas carried them between monasteries, lifting each card at arm’s length during an empowerment so initiates could fix the deity in their visualisation. Laid out in order, a set becomes a portable mandala; tucked into a gau, a single card travels as protection.

The imagery shifts with each ritual. Wrathful herukas and protectors, some animal-headed or many-armed, dance within halos of flame, turning obstacles into wisdom. Buddhas and lineage masters sit enthroned, hands shaped in mudras. Other cards hold no figure: a phurba dagger, a dorje, a flaming jewel, a torma offering cake, an elephant bearing treasure. These can stand in for objects too rare to procure, and in funerary rites guide the deceased through the bardo.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
