Tibetan funerary rites map a passage called the bardo, where the wandering mind meets faces like this one. A snake-headed green monster leans from a ring of flames in rust red, fangs bared and one rimmed eye fixed on you. Sized for a palm, this tsakli card was painted for that crossing.

Watch the hands. One hoists a shadowed object toward the burning rim. Lower down, a fist cradles a bone-white bell against the hip, its vajra handle gripped tight. In Vajrayana practice the ghanta voices wisdom, and this one hangs poised to ring someone home.

Salmon lotus petals buckle beneath a pale disc where one splayed foot rests. A spotted hide in tawny umber fringes the thighs, the costume of Himalayan wrathful protectors. Hairline fissures creep over the green corners like frost on a monastery pane, the trace of gouache passed from lama to lama. Hung as a Tibetan Buddhist art print, the guide stays awake on your wall, tongue out, waiting at the door.

Origin Story

Tsakli are Tibetan Buddhist initiation cards: miniature paintings made in sets of a handful to nearly a hundred. Itinerant lamas carried them between monasteries, lifting each card at arm’s length during an empowerment so initiates could fix the deity in their visualisation. Laid out in order, a set becomes a portable mandala; tucked into a gau, a single card travels as protection.

The imagery shifts with each ritual. Wrathful herukas and protectors, some animal-headed or many-armed, dance within halos of flame, turning obstacles into wisdom. Buddhas and lineage masters sit enthroned, hands shaped in mudras. Other cards hold no figure: a phurba dagger, a dorje, a flaming jewel, a torma offering cake, an elephant bearing treasure. These can stand in for objects too rare to procure, and in funerary rites guide the deceased through the bardo.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
