About This Artwork
In Red and Green Architecture, Klee dismantled architecture into sensation. Painted during his early Bauhaus tenure in 1922, rectangular forms tessellate across the picture plane—viridian beside rust, lime abutting brick-brown, black anchoring the lower edge like a foundation half-buried in earth.
The artist's Tunisia notebooks illuminate the composition: burgundy arches recalling North African kasbahs, their stucco facades bleached by sun. Watercolor washes bleed into gouache, producing surfaces both matte and luminous, each color block asserting its own depth. A chartreuse square flares near center, the lone warm-cool outlier in a field of complements.
Klee's grid refuses architectural logic—walls tilt, windows float unmoored—yet the whole achieves structural coherence through color weight and spatial rhythm. Expressionist geometry, Bauhaus rigor, and the afterimage of a desert city, all held in suspension.
