Here, Romantic melancholy meets scientific curiosity—Sabbath as laboratory of sin. Every body is studied, catalogued, made visible through engraver’s precision.
The forest closes around this frenzy, a chiaroscuro of moral panic and artistic control. Bayard turns fear into ornament, night into an architecture of desire. The print breathes with 19th-century anxieties—alchemy, gender, heresy, truth itself under acid and steel.
