About the Artwork
Ichikawa Sadanji II as Narukami Shonin glares out of this Shunsen phone case with a storm parked behind his brow. Crimson kumadori makeup claws upward from each lower lid. Plum-black brows knot above the nose. His mouth sags into a wine-dark bow of fury.
Natori Shunsen cut this okubi-e head in the 1920s, when shin-hanga printmakers dragged the kabuki actor portrait back toward the jolt of the old Edo stage. Look at the hair. Every lacquer-black strand was carved by hand into cherry wood and rubbed onto ivory paper with a baren. A teal haze stains his temples.
Narukami is the hermit monk who locked every rain dragon of Japan inside a waterfall. Drought followed. Then Princess Taema arrived with sake and a seductive tale. He forgot his vows and drank. Sadanji II returned this Kabuki Juhachiban play to the Tokyo stage in 1910, and this Japanese woodblock print keeps the moment the trick lands.
