One cold shock of cobalt sits low in Yokugo no Onna (Woman After a Bath), the 1915 nude by Goyō Hashiguchi. A white-dappled tenugui, pressed tight near her feet, hovers over a lacquer tub the shade of pickled plum.
Through the late Meiji years he painted oils under Kuroda Seiki and designed book covers for Natsume Sōseki's novels. Edo print scholarship pulled him backward. With carvers bent over cherry blocks, he turned a woman crouched to wash into his first Japanese woodblock print and an early landmark of shin-hanga.
Her black chignon, pinned with a bone-pale comb, tips toward the chore. Soot swirls crowd her shoulder. A rust-orange post climbs into dove-gray wall. Folded on an olive ledge, a walnut-striped robe curls like a sleeping cat.
Taishō-era Tokyo outside was clanging with electric trams. Inside, the bijin-ga beauty Utamaro once drew returns to an hour of skin and cool water that this Japanese art print keeps wet on your wall.
