J.C. Leyendecker builds this Baseball Catcher from wire and nerve. He squats on a 1909 Saturday Evening Post cover and dares the pitcher to throw. The cage mask bars a face gone flat with focus. Two ink-black bands rule the backdrop like lines on a scorecard.
Deadball Era catchers met the fastball with padding and luck. Leyendecker paints that bargain in oil on canvas. A chest protector of quilted khaki canvas hangs from his collar like a shield cut from a feed sack. The pillow-fat catcher's mitt shows every rawhide stitch. His bare hand splays its fingers, ready to sting.
Crosshatched brushstrokes of bone white churn around his knees like infield chalk kicked loose. Tangerine sleeves and striped socks set the oatmeal flannel uniform alight. Umber shadow pools under black laced cleats.
The Golden Age of American Illustration struts here, painted by the man behind the Arrow Collar Man. Leyendecker landed in Chicago as a German-born boy and by 1909 his Saturday Evening Post covers reached a million homes.
