Troy fell to a gift. In 1927 Kuppenheimer offered its own, a bolt of Trojan Weaves wool rolled beside a soldier's shin, and J.C. Leyendecker painted the sentry who guards it. Tight coils of spring sack suit cloth waiting to become armor for Jazz Age commuters.
Bone white cloth flares into a scalloped kilt edged in jet. Checkered pteruges swing from his waist, black squares knocking against pale ones in a rhythm borrowed from Deco tile. Silver greaves shine at the knee. A baldric slants to a sheathed sword.
His skin glows with the peach polish that made Leyendecker the Roaring Twenties' favorite painter of men. Behind him a round shield swells in dented pewter. Terracotta drapery wraps his forearm, and the spear rises straight through the lettering to stitch headline to hand.
Few magazine illustrations flirted so openly with classical revival. The caption boasts of a stalwart wonder-woolen built to rebuff the ravages of wear. His stance agrees.
