Salt heat licks a bare back on the gun deck of J.C. Leyendecker's Collier's magazine cover. The shirtless sailor faces away from us. His spine is a river of copper and umber, each muscle carved in hatched brushstrokes that glint with sweat. Leather gauntlets clamp a long artillery shell. Beside him a gunner in a white undershirt cradles its steel nose, jaw set toward the horizon.
Sea foam and cordite smoke share one burnt orange flare around the gun crew. Above them a naval officer in midnight navy wool lifts his binoculars. His white cap bites straight into the masthead. World War I had just pulled America to sea, and these US Navy sailors carry that weight in their shoulders.
Leyendecker painted this at the height of the Golden Age of American illustration, with Charles Beach, his partner and the face of the Arrow Collar Man, never far from the easel. Gay art history hums in lit shoulder blades. This vintage magazine art print holding the homoerotic gaze of wartime propaganda on suntanned backs, braced for the recoil.
