Golf, 1913, finds J.C. Leyendecker's Arrow Collar Man paused beside the fairway, right hand planted on his hip. A chestnut leather golf bag rides his left side. The club collar gleams bone white at his throat and a rust-striped necktie slants down an ivory shirt that catches the sun in cut facets. Leyendecker carved that cotton in oil on canvas, stacking chiseled highlights over umber shadow.
Behind him, wind tears the white air into lavender-gray shards. Cluett, Peabody & Company paid for this gaze. Their detachable collars sold by the millions, and the Arrow Collar advertising campaign drew fan mail from women convinced he was real. Charles Beach, the artist's partner at home in New Rochelle, posed for many of these Edwardian menswear fantasies.
