The Donchester & the Cluett Dress Shirt (1911) was painted to sell starched linen for Cluett, Peabody & Company of Troy, New York. It sells something warmer, sweeter, sexier. Charles Beach, the artist's longtime partner, gave Leyendecker's men their famous chiselled jaw, and that private devotion hums beneath every glossy lapel.
The mustached dandy pinches one waxed tip between his fingers. A gold watch fob swings against his piqué waistcoat, pale as heavy cream. His elbow sinks into a scrolled walnut armrest.
Across the gap, his companion sits in profile. Pomaded chestnut hair, a flush of rose madder on the cheek. A white carnation boutonniere glows on his lapel. Both hands twist a pair of kid gloves into knots of nerve.
This is the Arrow Collar Man world at full gleam. Jet black tailcoats catch the light in slashing ribbons of oil paint. Behind them the ivory ground stays raw and crosshatched, a studio sketch still humming. Golden Age American illustration rarely looked this candid.
