About the Artist

Edward Burne-Jones conjured visions of medieval longing and mythic reverie that defied the industrial age around him. Born in 1833 in Birmingham, this Pre-Raphaelite dream-weaver fused poetry, painting, and design into a unified art of enchantment. A close collaborator with William Morris, Burne-Jones designed stained glass, tapestries, and books for Morris & Co., reviving craftsmanship with spiritual fervour. His oil paintings—The Beguiling of Merlin, The Golden Stairs, The Briar Rose—glow with otherworldly grace, where knights and muses drift in a suspended, eternal twilight. Champion of Aestheticism, he offered not realism, but beauty “in a light better than any light that ever shone.”
