About the Artist

Suzuki Kiitsu (1796–1858) was a Japanese painter of the Rinpa school, renowned for his luminous byōbu folding screens that blur the line between decorative art and dreamscape. A devoted pupil of Sakai Hōitsu, Kiitsu carried the Rinpa aesthetic into the late Edo period, blending reverence for his masters with bold, original flair. Once dismissed as a minor figure, he is now hailed as a key innovator—his Morning Glories and Mountain Stream in Summer and Autumn are celebrated as masterpieces of hyperreal beauty and compositional brilliance.

Kiitsu reimagined classical motifs—most notably Wind God and Thunder God—with a vivid theatricality and meticulous brushwork that elevated Edo Rinpa into a distinct, vibrant style. Though not the formal heir to Hōitsu’s lineage, Kiitsu mentored a generation of artists, shaping what is now often called the “Kiitsu school” of Edo Rinpa. His work continues to captivate audiences in modern exhibitions, earning overdue recognition for his exquisite, immersive visions of nature and myth.
