About the Artist

Jean Louis Marie Eugène Durieu (1800–1874) was a French pioneer of nude photography, whose lens laid bare the body with a reverence that rivalled brush and chisel. A lawyer turned visual experimenter, Durieu retired early to explore the raw alchemy of light and flesh through calotype and salted paper prints. His sensual studies of male and female nudes—often models for Eugène Delacroix—blurred the line between eroticism and academic form. Collaborating with Delacroix in 1853, Durieu’s photographs became living scaffolds for Romantic canvases. As a founding figure in the Société française de photographie, he helped shape photography’s early scientific legitimacy—before resigning amid scandal.
