About the Artist

Julien Renevier (1847–1907) was a Swiss painter whose artistic path wove through theology, history painting, portraiture, and the luminous landscapes of Italy.

Initially studying theology at the Lausanne Academy, he abandoned his religious training in 1872 to pursue painting, refining his craft under Carl Steffeck in Berlin and later at the Munich Academy with Carl Theodor von Piloty.

Immersed in the Munich School’s realism, Renevier honed a style marked by historical gravitas and exquisite portraiture.
