About the Artist

Richard Müller (1874–1954) was a prodigy who entered the Dresden Academy at sixteen, but his brilliance sharpened under Max Klinger, Germany’s master of Symbolist etching. Where his classmate Käthe Kollwitz grappled with social agony, Müller turned inward—to the strange, the sensual, the surreal. His early prints seduce with technical finesse and disturbing wit: naked figures tangled with oversized birds, a bear painting for a gallery of monkeys.

He won the Prix de Rome in 1897, but shunned modernism’s frenzy. As Expressionism rose, Müller doubled down on grotesque realism, trading etching for obsessive draftsmanship that often verged on the macabre. Though he taught Otto Dix and George Grosz at the Dresden Academy, they rebelled against his conservative vision.

For decades, Müller was buried under the very modernism he refused. But in 1974, his resurrection began—with a major revival at Galerie Brockstedt in Hamburg. Once dismissed as an anachronism, Müller now haunts the margins of German art history—irreverent, precise, and defiantly out of time.
