Charles Allan Gilbert’s 1892 drawing All is Vanity folds satire into the macabre. The sitter, finely dressed, arranges herself before a vanity table, surrounded by polished bottles and the glow of reflected lamplight. Yet the oval mirror encircles her image until the entire composition reads as a skull, collapsing leisure into mortality.
The piece circulated widely in the early twentieth century, a popular American print that bridged illustration, Symbolist wit, and moralizing tradition inherited from European vanitas.
