Abandoned Home in Rural Maryland - Carol M. Highsmith Framed Canvas

$110USD

The farmhouse slumps amidst weeds and winter stripped trees. Pale boards blistering under a washed-out sky. A sagging roofline tilting toward collapse, yet its geometry still holds—defiant in ruin.

In Highsmith’s lens, the abandoned dwelling becomes both elegy and archive: the stubborn vernacular of rural Maryland surviving its own disappearance.

The porch door hangs open like an unfinished sentence. Air moves through empty rooms that once held radios, supper smoke, prayer, argument. Every warped plank and rusted hinge whispers about work done by calloused hands, now dust.

A still life of labor and loss, rendered in tonal grit, where history oxidizes quietly on the siding, and memory hovers between the timber grain and the overgrown road beyond.

Artist Biography

Carol M. Highsmith (born Carol Louise McKinney, 1946) is an American photographer celebrated for her sweeping visual chronicle of the United States. Since the 1980s, she has travelled the nation, capturing its architecture, landscapes, and everyday life with meticulous precision. Her lifelong project, Carol M. Highsmith’s America, has produced nearly 100,000 images—each donated to the Library of Congress and placed in the public domain. Drawing inspiration from Frances Benjamin Johnston and Dorothea Lange, Highsmith sees her camera as a tool of preservation rather than artistry, documenting America’s transformation with clarity, reverence, and unflinching honesty.
