About the Artwork

A horse cart halts beside towering reeds, its driver bent in rhythm with the day’s quiet tide. Hasui Kawase captures Edo’s Komagata Kashi with a precision that mingles ukiyo-e lineage and shin-hanga innovation, where woodblock pigment binds sky, river, timber wheels, straw hat, and shadowed figure.

The scene feels paused between commerce and contemplation, tracing Japan’s Meiji modernity, yet rooted in traditional labor and Sumida River crossings. Grainy textures echo Edo streets, while blues shimmer like fleeting lantern light upon canal water.

This iPhone case preserves Kawase’s atmospheric calm, infusing your device with floating world memory, Taisho-era artistry, Tokyo cartography, and timeless craft, where each detail turns utilitarian protection into a portable shrine of art history and everyday poetry.

Artist Biography

Hasui Kawase (1883–1957) was Japan’s great poet of place, etching twilight rivers, temple courtyards, and snow-laden lanes into the soul of modern printmaking. A master of the shin-hanga movement, he fused ukiyo-e tradition with Western naturalism, creating nearly 1,000 woodblock prints shimmering with atmosphere, moonlight, and rain. Born in Tokyo, Hasui abandoned his family’s trade after its collapse to study art under Kiyokata Kaburagi, who gave him the name “Hasui”—“water gushing from a spring.” Collaborating with publisher Shōzaburō Watanabe, Hasui redefined landscape art for Japan’s new century. Revered abroad, crowned a Living National Treasure in 1956, his prints endure as lyrical windows into a vanishing Japan.
