A burin plowed this skull into copper somewhere in Stuart Britain. The furrows still hold their ink. Vanitas, by an unnamed British 17th Century hand, sets a human skull on a closed book with its upper teeth resting on musical notes you can hear in the distance. Every curve of the cranium in this copperplate engraving is built from cross-hatching, swelling lines pressed into laid paper the color of bone ivory. And every playlist you carry sits behind the Vanitas tune, guarded by a deathly grin.

The sheet music spills off the table edge below the teeth, its staves sliding toward silence. A candlestick lifts a wide drip pan behind the brow. To the left, a whorled shell leans over a crumpled scrap lettered omnia vanitas. This is memento mori from a century when Londoners counted plague dead in weekly printed bills. Baroque still life, priced for a clerk.

Tiny flicks round the forehead until parchment cream sinks to bister inside each hollow. A sea snail's spiral house sits emptied of its tenant. Small blossoms open top right, a week from wilting. A creased note below quotes Ecclesiastes in Latin: all is vanity. Dutch painters in Leiden preached this mortality sermon in oils. British printsellers sold it across shop counters in a century split by civil war.

Sepia shadow and umber ground now wrap a matte tough case. The Old Master print rides in your palm. This skull phone case carries the engraver's oldest joke into your pocket, where every glance at the hour meets a stare with nothing behind it.

Origin Story

Vanitas is the still life that stares back. A genre of memento mori ("remember that you will die"), it gathers transitory things into allegorical art, each object a verdict on the transience of life, the uselessness of pleasure and the certainty of death. Its Latin name means vanity as futility, not pride, echoing Ecclesiastes: "Vanity of Vanities, saith the preacher, all is vanity".

Begun in the sixteenth century and carried into the seventeenth, vanitas painting grew from a group of Leiden painters into a Dutch Baroque staple, while painters at the end of the Spanish Golden Age turned its symbols on Spain's rulers and politics. Bartholomaeus Bruyn the Elder's 1524 Vanitas names death "the ultimate limit of all things". Formulaic and rooted in the Christian Bible, it lets the skull speak plainly: human action is temporary, faith is forever.
