About This Artwork
In the dust-flecked hush of early morning trade, the market hums. Men with crimson cummerbunds and pale turbans guide their horses through a choreography of commerceโeach mount cinched with embroidered saddles, each rider caught mid-gesture.
This Ottoman procession folds time: Istanbul in miniature, stitched into parchment hues. Look closely and youโll see hierarchy inscribed through fabricโgreen robes with gold fastenings, ochre jackets eclipsed by flowing cloaks. Horses tilt their necks in unison, as if answering an unspoken callโstirred not by reins, but centuries of ceremonial muscle memory.
The case captures the Ottoman horse bazaar not as spectacle, but as structureโtrading bodies, roles, silences. From groom to noble, vendor to envoy, every figure bears the solemnity of civic ritual. Persianate precision. Mughal-inflected elegance. A palimpsest of Istanbulโs equine diplomacy and sixteenth-century archive etched in gouache and graphite.
