The bolt rips diagonally, a molten seam opening thunder’s mouth; bodies spill outward, mid-tumble, mid-shriek. Broomlike mount at right torpedoes forward, tail fibers fraying into cinder dust.
American nineteenth-century imagination meets witch-flight folklore, sabbath myth, occult panic, storm augury, heretic theater. Palette registers lampblack, gunmetal, slate, marl, chalk, sulfur flare. Brushwork sketches wind shear across gowns, hair, ankles.
Think nocturne studies, phantasm spectacle, puritan nightmare, catastrophe painting and luminist slash inverted toward terror. Most of all, Beard’s satire bends full-tilt toward horror: coven upheaval, airborne calamity, bone pageant, thunder law, lightning creed, folklore cinema across empty space.
