Description

Beard launches seven night-sisters into a soot-colored sky, each figure stiff with skyshock: bone white fabric, corpse-lit cheeks, sockets like burnt almonds. The bolt rips diagonally, a molten seam opening thunder’s mouth; bodies spill outward, mid-tumble, mid-shriek. Broomlike mount at right torpedoes forward, tail fibers fraying into cinder dust.

American nineteenth-century imagination meets witch-flight folklore, sabbath myth, occult panic, storm augury, heretic theater. Palette registers lampblack, gunmetal, slate, marl, chalk, sulfur flare. Brushwork sketches wind shear across gowns, hair, ankles.

Think nocturne studies, phantasm spectacle, puritan nightmare, catastrophe painting and luminist slash inverted toward terror. Most of all, Beard’s satire bends full-tilt toward horror: coven upheaval, airborne calamity, bone pageant, thunder law, lightning creed, folklore cinema across empty space.

About the Artist

William Holbrook Beard (1825–1900) is the American painter best remembered for wry, anthropomorphic animals staging human folly. Trained in Cincinnati and sharpened by European study, he settled in New York, where bears brawl on Wall Street, monkeys preen, cats scheme, and morality plays unfold in fur and claw. His nineteenth-century canvases blend satire, allegory, and luminous landscape craft, attracting salons and popular prints alike. Beard’s menagerie doubles as cultural critique: capitalism as carnivora, politics as pantomime, desire as a masquerade. Today he ranks among America’s animal painters, a sharp-eyed fabulist whose brush taught viewers to see themselves inside the beast.
