About this Artwork
In Undertow, Homer gives the Atlantic an adversary's intelligence. At Prout's Neck, Maine, a dark teal wave gathers its mass behind four figures locked in the surf's lateral drag — two women, two men, all in Victorian-era bathing dress, all reduced by water to weight and sinew.
The woman in cobalt-blue wool is half-submerged, her golden hair spreading into a cerulean wash; her companion arcs backward, pale arms reaching for anything solid. Against them: a bare-chested rescuer bracing his ivory torso against the foam, and a rope-holding figure in ochre and olive crouched into the shallows. The ash-gray overcast presses the scene flat.
Homer's oil passages move from tight sculptural flesh rendering to loose, churning wave crests, that contrast itself reading as the gap between human will and oceanic indifference — 19th-century America staring into its own shoreline.
