Saturnino Herrán opens The Offering (1913) on one raised arm: a young boatman drives a punting pole straight up above his own head, loose white shirt open at the throat, blue waist-cloth knotted at his hip. Stacked cempasúchil marigold buries the trajinera's floor around his ankles, orange heads pressed so close their stems disappear.

An older man beside him leans into a wide-brimmed hat, mouth open, calling across the flat Xochimilco current toward a second boat crossing behind them loaded with more bloom and more straw hats. Lower in the hull a woman bends over with a sleeping child on her back, wrapped in pale cloth, while a boy stares directly at you as the water swirls past.

Herrán, working inside Mexican modernism's turn toward mestizo daily labor, sets this poling motion against a Day of the Dead delivery, marigold cargo carried as ofrenda before it ever reaches an altar. Behind the boatman the sky sits flat and pale. His pole alone breaks that stillness, one bright line against pale water.

Origin Story

Saturnino Herrán (1887–1918) was a Mexican painter of indigenous and Franco-Swiss descent who laid the groundwork for muralism a decade before Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros claimed its glory. Born in Aguascalientes and formed at Mexico City's Academy of San Carlos under Julio Ruelas and Catalan painter Antonio Fabrés, he fused European naturalism with a fierce mexicanidad.

His canvases dignify what academic painting ignored: Día de los Muertos offerings on Xochimilco's canals, Tehuana women luminous and unhurried, Indigenous labor rendered without condescension. The unfinished Our Gods triptych — Coatlicue and the crucified Christ fused into one body — is mestizo Mexico made pigment and prophecy.

Dead at thirty-one, his draftsmanship and warm chromatic vision, held today at the Museo Nacional de Arte, seeded everything that followed.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
