In The Fallen Angel, Alexandre Cabanel pins Lucifer to a rock seconds after the fall, arms locked across his mouth so fury exits through one eye. That eye is rimmed rust red and wet. It stares through you as if you signed his eviction.

Cabanel painted this oil on canvas in 1847 at the Villa Medici, a Prix de Rome student with Milton's Paradise Lost open in his head. Lucifer hides behind his own biceps, knuckles laced. Legs flung long across moss-crusted stone, ankles crossed in fake calm. Honeyed ochre flesh rolls over every rib of this male nude with French academic polish.

The mood belongs to Romanticism, sulking and gorgeous. Copper curls whip sideways. A wing of peacock teal and bronze lies crushed beneath his hip. A choir of angels streams through powder blue sky in lilac robes, too busy celebrating to glance down. Brambles creep toward his heel.
