Origin Story

John Russell RA (1745–1806) was an English painter celebrated for his luminous portraits in oils and pastels and for fusing faith with artistry. Born in Guildford, Surrey, he trained under Francis Cotes and inherited the pastel refinement of Rosalba Carriera. A devout Methodist, Russell’s moral rigor shaped both his life and art, recorded in meticulous shorthand diaries. His portraits captured Britain’s intellectual elite—scientists like William Herschel—and his celestial masterpiece The Face of the Moon (1793–1797) remains a landmark of artistic astronomy. As painter, teacher, and innovator, Russell bridged Enlightenment science with the fervor of spiritual devotion.
