About the Artist

Ohara Koson, born in 1877 in Kanazawa, was a Japanese woodblock artist whose prints capture the fleeting beauty of nature. He revitalized traditional ukiyo-e through the shin-hanga movement, transforming each kachō-e piece into an exquisite meditation on nature’s poetry. Cranes in mid-flight, cherry blossoms poised to fall—Koson’s art captures ephemeral elegance with soft pigments and negative space, evoking a quiet resonance.

Koson's portfolio chronicles Japan’s shifting identity during the Meiji, Taishō, and Shōwa periods. His work, forgotten after his death in 1945, has since risen, symbolizing the timeless harmony between tradition and innovation.
