Artwork Description
A vermilion sail slices through the Trieux estuary where Paul Sérusier flattened Breton coastline into pure Synthetist planes. The Pont-Aven master reduced this Côtes-d'Armor tidal river to essential strokes—tan kraft paper breathing through passages of raw sienna hillside and charcoal cypress clusters. His crayon drags across the sheet with a calligraphic certainty learned from Gauguin's Cloisonnist instruction at Le Pouldu.
The single triangular sail, saturated with cadmium-orange intensity, holds the lower composition like a prayer flag against cream-toned currents. Hatched umber vegetation climbs the left embankment while a mauve cottage roof glows beneath horizontal striations mapping distant Armorican ridgelines.
Sérusier's Nabis philosophy transforms provincial fishing vessels into pictorial meditations, the Trieux becoming less geography than spiritual cartography rendered in earth and flame.
